Best Filler for Laugh Lines

Women toucing near her laugh lines

Laugh lines are vertical lines that form along the sides of the nose and down to the mouth, sometimes extending to the chin. Laugh lines can present themselves in the form of a nasolabial crease or a nasolabial fold. The nasolabial crease is the line that forms between the upper lip and cheek, while the fold is the skin or tissue that hangs over that crease. Both types of laugh lines develop over time due to aging and other lifestyle factors.

Most people have a nasolabial crease, so it isn’t necessarily a sign of aging. The crease grows deeper with age, weight gain, and recession of the dentition, or dental problems, such as when the teeth no longer support the overlying tissue.

Treating Laugh Lines

The right treatment to reduce their appearance will depend on whether they are dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles made visible by movement) or static wrinkles (wrinkles visible when the face isn’t making an expression). The goal of treatment should be to prevent static wrinkles because they can become more difficult to treat over time.

Dynamic laugh lines are seen when the person is smiling or laughing, while static laugh lines are visible when the person isn’t making a facial expression. These wrinkles are pretty common because the muscles around the eyes and lips are frequently used when blinking, smiling, and making other expressions.

Why Choose Fillers

The most common treatment for laugh lines around the mouth are fillers. It’s important to find a board-certified skincare professional who understands the nuances of facial anatomy. An experienced professional will know how much filler to inject and where.

If too much filler is placed in the laugh line, the individual may end up looking puffy and odd around the mouth. Some aestheticians and doctors adopt a conservative approach, in which they use one syringe, let it settle in, and re-evaluate in a week or so to see the patient’s response and to decide if the patient needs further treatment.

Many skincare professionals prefer hyaluronic acid-based fillers to treat laugh lines because the line-plumping results are visible almost immediately. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found under the skin which, unlike BOTOX®, delivers results right after injection.

Why Choose BOTOX®

Smiling and laughing not only moves the mouth, but also animates the eyes and forms creases. To address the laugh lines that appear near the eyes, most skincare professionals recommend BOTOX®. The toxin works to un-wrinkle the face, like un-crinkling a wrinkled piece of paper.

BOTOX® can be used between the eyebrows, in the forehead, and around the eyes. Patients will see results within one week of treatment, with effects lasting for three to six months.

Lifestyle Factors That Cause Laugh Lines

To reduce the formation of deep wrinkles through daily habits, patients should focus on getting enough sleep at night, limiting alcohol consumption, and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep the skin healthy. It’s also important to use sunscreen everyday to help preserve natural collagen and prevent lines from deepening.
