BOTOX is a prescription drug called OnabotulinumtoxinA. It is a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria strain of Clostridium botulinum. It is FDA approved for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles and lines and is completely safe.

how does botox work?

BOTOX is a neurotoxin that, when injected into muscles, relaxes them from motion for a period of time. When used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it does so by temporarily blocking the nerve activity in the muscles surrounding the wrinkle, preventing the muscle from forming the motion that created the wrinkle or crease. The result is a smoother, wrinkle-free skin surface.

is botox a wrinkle filler?

No. BOTOX only prevents the muscles from forming the wrinkle in the skin. Facial fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane are a different type of injection in which an injectable gel is gently injected inside the wrinkle area, filling in the wrinkle by plumping up the skin and making the wrinkle disappear. BOTOX and facial fillers work together; the filler fills in the wrinkle while the BOTOX keeps the wrinkle from reforming.

WILL BOTOX RESULTS SHOW RIGHT AWAY?

No. Patients that receive BOTOX injections start noticing a difference in their facial muscles about two to seven days after the injections. Full effect of the BOTOX injection can take up to two weeks.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED BOTOX INJECTIONS?

Typically, when you begin BOTOX injections you will need to repeat the process every three to four months. Patients report that with repeated injections they can go longer in between treatments. Some patients have their BOTOX injections once per year because they have been getting this highly effective wrinkle treatment on a regular basis.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BEFORE & AFTER BOTOX?

Avoid taking aspirin, NSAIDs, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, fish oil supplements and other anticoagulant medications several days before receiving BOTOX injections. Men taking Coumadin or Warfarin should not be getting BOTOX injections. Also, do not drink alcohol 24 hours before your treatment. After administration of BOTOX, do not massage or rub the injection sites. Avoid heavy physical activity for at least 24 hours after receiving injections. Your injector will advise you not to lie down (sitting upright is fine) for around four hours following treatment. The possibility exists that lying down may facilitate the spread of BOTOX to other parts of the body, which may cause unwanted side effects.
