Woman with perfect nose after rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is performed to change the aesthetic appearance of the nose, improve its function, or both. The nose may be reshaped in order to increase or decrease its size, remove bumps on the bridge, correct a birth defect, repair an injury, reposition the septum, or improve breathing.

Benefits of a Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty may correct a nose that:

Has a bump or depression on the bridge
Seems off-center
Seems crooked
Isn't proportional with the face
Has excessively flared nostrils
Has a drooping or bulbous tip

A rhinoplasty may also correct injuries that occur, for example, as a result of car accidents, surfing, playing high school sports games or playing football games. Patients who have difficulty breathing while sleeping may also benefit from a rhinoplasty.

Who is a Candidate?

Rhinoplasty may only be performed on individuals who are at least 13 years of age. It’s important that patients have finished growing in their face to avoid complications later on.

In addition, patients should be nonsmokers, in good health, and have realistic expectations.

what to expect

Before the procedure can begin, the patient will receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on how complex the surgery is. A rhinoplasty typically takes one to two hours.

Rhinoplasty may be open or closed (also called “endonasal”). A closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty is done with a small incision completely inside the nose, while an open rhinoplasty is done through small external cuts, or incisions, at the base of the nose.

During an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella, which is the strip of skin between the nostrils. Dr. Pollei will then lift the skin in order to readjust the bone and cartilage. This method is typically used when patients would like to build up or reduce the bridge. Once the adjustments are completed, the skin is re-draped over the new structure. Patients will have a barely visible small scar on the columella that fades over time.

During a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made within the nose to help prevent visible scarring. This method is used for patients who would like to improve breathing and change the overall size of the nose. If the nose is going to be made thinner or smaller, then Dr. Pollei will fracture the nasal bones. For patients who would like to increase the size of their nose, Dr. Pollei will use additional grafting material, like cartilage from the patient’s ears or ribs.

Patients will have swelling and bruising of the nose after the surgery. Splints and some packing material will remain inside the nose for a few days. Patients should avoid engaging in strenuous exercise, showering, blowing their nose, or doing anything that may put pressure on the nose. It typically takes a few days for patients to go back to feeling normal and about a week until they can resume daily activities.
