What is JUVEDERM ULTRA XC?

Juvéderm Ultra XC is an FDA-approved dermal filler primarily used to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles and to increase lip volume in adults. The filler is made of a gel-like material that contains water, hyaluronic acid (HA), and lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance found in the body that supports skin volume. The “XC” in the product name indicates the addition of 0.3 percent lidocaine, a substance designed to minimize pain during the injections. The addition of lidocaine in the filler also helps save time because the patient won’t need a separate topical pain reliever to be applied prior to the treatment.

What happens during treatment?

The specialist will begin by cleansing the patient’s skin and then identify the areas that need treatment. He or she won’t need to apply a topical anesthetic since the filler already contains lidocaine. The total time necessary to make the injections will depend on the client’s treatment goals and how many injections they need. The client won’t feel any pain, but they may have a slight pressure and tingling sensation as the product is injected. The entire procedure may take up to one hour.

What is recovery like?

Clients are free to go back to work after treatment, but should avoid strenuous exercise, sun exposure, and alcoholic beverages for the first 24 hours to minimize redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site.

How soon will I see results?

Like other Juvéderm products, Juvéderm Ultra XC might create noticeable differences in the skin almost immediately. These results can last up to one year. Typically, fillers containing hyaluronic acid last six to 12 months until they are fully absorbed by the body. Clients will need follow-up treatments to maintain their desired results. After the initial treatment, the specialist will offer recommendations for the frequency of maintenance treatments.

Are there any side effects?

While the treatment itself isn’t painful, clients may feel slight pain within 24 hours of the injections. Other common side effects include redness, swelling, tenderness, firmness, lumps, skin discoloration, and bruising. These side effects are mild and usually subside within seven days.
